Looking ahead for 2009

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Africa, Health

It is quiet here in Maputo at present. Christmas is the start of the summer holiday in the southern hemisphere, and many of my colleagues in government and development agencies are still on holiday. But there is quite a lot to plan for, 2009 is going to be a busy year.

In February we have a joint evaluation of the performance of the health sector, which will give me the opportunity to go out to hospitals and health centres and see first hand how services are being delivered. On my last visit to a health centre in Nampula in the North of Mozambique I was impressed by how much can be done with so few resources. But to be honest, the limited facilities did remind me of my time working as a doctor in Malawi over 16 years ago, with clean but sparse buildings, ageing beds and equipment and limited supplies of drugs.

Things are improving here, but from a very low starting point. It is often difficult on a day to day basis to see the changes - but over a longer time horizon real change is visible.

To give you a sense of the existing health care infrastructure, here's a mini photo gallery from a recent trip to Nhamatanda, in Sofala Province. Click on the thumbnails to get a bigger picture.

I was interested to see your blog from Mozambique.
To explain: I was responsible for the design of DFID Maputo office when I worked as DFID Architect (until Jan. 05). Iam now working in the private sector in the UK.

It will be interesting to know if DFID is still at the same office, which I designed when Emon was Head of Office, and it will be good to know how the layout preforms now?
Give my regards to Liz if she is still in Mozambique.

    Regards,
    Joe
